Don first began attending the Ballard Boys & Girls Club down the street from his school when he was in 5th grade. He was first introduced to the Club by using its sports fields for P.E. class and soon became engaged in its after-school activities. He attending the Club into high school – nearly 6 years.
“The people there made all the difference,” Don said. “The Club was about a lot more than just hanging out. Character, community, and caring were what you learned. Along with leadership.”
Don came from a household where both parents worked so having the support and dedication of Club staff was crucial. They helped instill in him values and taught him how to be a stand-up young adult.
Don recently retired from the Economic Development Association of Skagit County after being its Executive Director for 28 years. Credited with motivating employers to move to Skagit County, as well as influencing much needed wage increases in the area, Don’s skills in building and maintaining business relationships have earned him numerous awards.
